Local term...

It's not Canadian bacon in Canada; it's peamael bacon.

It's not French onion soup; it's gratinated onion soup.

Now you know.

PS, Chris - yours is better than what I've had here...

What do they call vanilla cake?

I never saw gateux vanille. I´m guessing that would be too simple for the French.

Wow. Ry had a lot to say... No cooking class, as I really only had enough time to see the top sites and move on. I regret that a bit. French cooking is for special occasions, as it´s a bit heavier than I can tolerate. The pants are a bit tighter.

I didn´t encounter French toast. As far as I can tell, it´s a croissant and cafĂ© au lait for breakfast. Or a baguette and cheese products. I never saw a place to get eggs, let alone French toast.

I never got to the French cuffs. I did see a couple of sex shops, but nothing like Amsterdam.

The PDA was rampant. I had read editions in SE Asia, warning that public display of affection was verboten. I understand now that it was directed at the French.

And I never tried the auto toilets for the very reason you mention. I was tempted. I had been told that they were set to not allow a human in during cleaning time, but I couldn´t be sure. Dutch engineering, I have great faith in. The French, less so.

Speaking of toilets, I once again saw a squat toilet at a truck stop in southern France. All of the stalls had aerial diagrams of the toilet inside. At first, I mistook the squat for a shower - oval at the top, lines coming out at angles below. But no, there were two squats and several typical toilets. I almost used it out of nostalgia, and the ironic thing is that I hovered over the Western style toilet. Those in public restrooms in France more often than not did not have a seat on the toilet.
